You’ve probably heard people talk about their astrological signs – Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, or Pisces. Maybe you regularly check your horoscope, and maybe you don’t, but you are probably familiar with astrology. But do you know much about the Chinese zodiac? The Chinese zodiac is more than just your typical horoscope. It’s a system to predict relationships, health, career, wealth, personal characteristics much like an astrological horoscope, but there are several differences between Western astrology and the Chinese zodiac. Western astrology is typically based on constellations and how the planets align. The Chinese zodiac is based on the temperaments of the twelve symbolic animals – rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. Each animal in the Chinese zodiac is associated with its own element – metal, wood, earth, water, or fire. These elements also have characteristics. The combination of the two elements is believed to define a person’s personality.
Each new year brings a new animal (one of the twelve mentioned earlier). The cycle began with the rat and continues down the list. After twelve years, the cycle restarts. There are different stories and legends explaining the origin of the Chinese Zodiac, but all explain that the zodiac is based on the twelve temperaments represented by twelve symbolic animals.
