I am inspired by the everyday things around me. People don’t often realize just how much inspiration is out there. It can be nature, antiques, vintage brick, etc. Inspiration doesn’t have to come from another’s letterer’s work, or even graphic design in general. I allow myself to be inspired by things that give my work a natural feel to it.
What background do you have?
Similarly to a lot of designers, I have been exposed to art throughout my life. My dad is a great illustrator and I always loved taking art classes throughout my education. I got my degree in graphic design, because I liked the idea of using art to solve problems. Ever since then I found my way of doing that was through hand lettering.
What makes you/your style unique?
A lot of my work has been described as vintage inspired. I think the use of textures and attention to detail sets my work apart. Something as simple as designing sans serif type with soft corners, as opposed to sharp corners can make a huge difference. The fact that I spend most of my design career lettering, forces me to pay attention to every stroke in each letter which allows me to give more unity to my work.
Where do you live in the world?
Where do I live, or where do I want to live?! I’d like to say I live in the mountains with elk for pets and getting my water from the surrounding rivers…. But actually I live in Omaha, Nebraska and have all my life. No elk, but it’s still pretty awesome and I have great support here!
